Lewis Roderick on joy first, then evangelism

10 Sep

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you [Ps 51:12].

I saw something new, and it it was challenging.

David, has two desires, right?

Desire #1 that his joy in God would be restored after repenting of sin. In just the same way that it was God that gave him his salvation in the first place, he knows that it is God alone that can renew the joy that he once had. That’s the first bit.

Desire #2 is that he would see others turn to trust in that same God for their salvation. As soon as he experiences God’s forgiveness, he knows that it’s not something that he can keep to himself – he wants others to know that same forgiveness he’s known.

But notice how David is certain that in order for desire #2 to be fulfilled, #1 has got to come first. ‘Restore to me the joy… then I will teach transgressors… and (then) sinners will return to you’. Can you see? David knows that in order to be fruitful in his evangelism, he must be first thrilled with the gospel. MUST.
