The Shack

The Shack has been a popular seller for a few months now, and the opinions of both Christians and non-Christians are hugely varied. I must admit I haven’t read this yet, although I intend to. Mark Driscoll Shares his thoughts below:

Let Everything Praise the Lord

12 Dec

Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his excellent greatness! (Ps 150:1-2)

God is good. I often forget just how good he is, and how much praise he deserves. Just in those two verses above we see reason to praise God infinitely more than we will ever be able to. “His mighty deeds” covers pretty much everything God has ever done – from before creation to the end of eternity.

At our carol service the other day I was struck by the God-centeredness of the whole event. In the run-up it was all too easy to get caught in the practicalities and worry about how many mince pies were going to turn up, but in the end, the service was about proclaiming Christ to the lost. It was humbling to realise, by God’s grace, that our ability or inability to organise all the little details could never get in the way of the His purposes. It didn’t matter whether there was a red bar across the top of the PowerPoint or not, or if the decorations weren’t completely symmetrical. It only mattered that Christ was proclaimed as saviour.

Realising God’s complete ability to work even through our weakness is both an encouragement and a motivation. Encouraging because we know that God has already won the victory and is always working to bring himself glory through salvation. Motivating because we can be assured that God can use even rubbish people like us with all our mistakes and flaws, and nothing can stop him doing so.

Praise be to God that he is a loving, merciful gracious and saving King. When we are tempted to rejoice in what we have accomplished and seek praise for ourselves rather than the Almighty, remember this:

Let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. (Jer 9:24)
